Rose and Al Sabangan, Waipahu
Beautiful day outside and no one at the smoking area across the street. Rode down the street and shaka’d the homeless guy with his dog. Every one says hello to everyone in Nanakuli. Went past the Ono Steak and Shrimp and waved hello to Jeffrey. And stopped at the stop light on Farrington.
Crossed the street, still on the bike but got off on the other side and walked along the Nanakuli tracks to the bus stop. The bus a little late and had nice conversation with the driver. He was not sure where Nanakuli Ridge was. I explained and he wanted to know about the “high rise.” I offer to get him a hat for next time.
Got off at the Transit Center at about six thirty and rode the bike to Kapolei Elementary. Nice ride, and I needed the exercise. A couple cars waiting for the doors to open. Which happened right about the time I parked my bike close to the door.
Waited a few minutes and I got nice crowd of early birds.
When the classes started, I got a couple pictures there too. Went around to get from different angles. Good crowd and some came late.
Later on after the important messages from President Martin Powell, with the help of Willy I got two crucial pictures very relevant to this club and the members.
As I was leaving Nora invited me to Aliamanu. I will use that as a reason and go. Maybe I can get some good pictures and make a nice write up. It remains to be seen if I can do some good. I will know.
I got back to the Kapolei Transit Center just in time to get the C bus going back to Nanakuli. And whadya know, same bus driver. That’s west Oahu.

Our eight Monday classes from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. are successfully underway at Kapolei Elementary. This term, HBDA dance instructors Theo and Diane Behic are teaching American Social Merengue, Tango and Salsa.
American Social Merengue – This is a fun dance to learn! With the usual four beats or steps for each complete slow turn, you may think the rhythm hypnotizes you in a wild and uncontrolled way. How so much fun that can be to learn the Merengue, as this frenetic dance in beat and motion will also invite you to be majestic with your upper body!
Tango – Ai Yi Yi YI ! I’m beginning to sound like Ricky Ricardo! No need say more! To gain your curiosity, let our well-seasoned dance instructors Theo and Diane Behic show you this alert dance on the Kapolei Elementary School floor!
Salsa – By the time you learn this dance you’ll think you’re multilingual! Oh no, only joking! Now why am I explaining all these dances to you? Shouldn’t you just be coming to our classes on Monday nights? It’s not too late!
And now –
We here at HBDA Kapolei recently had our great end-of-quarter social dance on March 19.
Sorry folks! Ai Yi Yi YI ! Another Ricky Ricardo commentary!
This must have been the biggest gathering ever! It must have been like dancers and visitors were almost busting out the doors! Oh,it was more than so much fun watching and mingling with everyone! Our gathering was so rich with hooking back up with former dancing classmates who came back! … and to learn more about out new classmates where we had time to relax and sit close together, now that was a treat to discover who they are and how fortunate we are to learn how to dance with them!
Get Ready! Another: Ai Yi Yi YI ! (pardon my Filipino accent! Sorry, Ricky!)
In addition to our chapter members, we had friends coming from our sister chapter Pearlridge and from Aliamanu. We were honored to have so many of our Telemark dance instructors join us, led by Benny and Faith Agbayani. Special mention of course is our recent instructors Mike Agor and Marcia Sorbo.
Yes! See, I told you! BOTH NORA AND WILLY DIONISIO REALLY KNOW HOW TO THROW A PARTY!
Well, no dance class and no dance night are ever complete unless you have the music man! I mean now, how can you have fun unless you have our very own DJ Augusto Jarra, “the” man with the great music!
When my wife Nieves and I enter any social dance event, I think the very first thing I do is not look where we are going to sit. From a distance, I purposely first look for who is going to provide the music! As the director of music, the DJ reflects his or her own experiences as a musical-minded person whose aim is to encourage and invite others to dance. DJ Augusto Jarra: You’re the Man! (How many times have I said that here?)
Augusto Jarra also guides us on the Kapolei floor for line dancing as well! What a nice variety this is! Even those who are shy who might not have a steady dance partner are still on the floor for the line dances! And so, nobody is left out! Even the so-called shy dancers will come out for line dancing; and you know what – I bet they’ll now be hooked to going all out to partnered dancing classes on Monday nights at HBDA Kapolei!
I always try to thank DJ Augusto for his musicality and danceability, for without him all we have is just the great food to eat on social night! That means: DON’T BE AFRAID TO EAT! YOU’RE GOING TO WORK IT OFF BECAUSE DJ AUGUSTO JARRA WILL MAKE SURE YOU DO!
Thank you, Augusto!
It was a slow day in Nanakuli, but at least I got a photo at Kokua Mau, so I can blog it. Rearranged my furnture which is now pretty well set. I need no more storage space. I just have to utilize what I have and remember a place for everything and every thing in its place.
Got ready with plenty of time and I crossed Farrington still on the bike. But got off on the other side and walked along the old Nanakuli tracks to the bus stop. I had to do what I always do, kick stand the bike and walk up to the high mound and look at the non stop ocean waves. I have to look to my left and my right to case the beaches. Not many people. Plenty of sunshine and the bus arrived on time.
Got off at Kapolei and had a nice bike ride to Kapolei Elementary. About six thirty and no one there yet. The lady caretaker was there a few minutes later and opened up the place. And about five minutes later the famous Willy and Nora Dionisio arrived with the goodies. Soon after Martin and Leona Powell arrived and the set up began in earnest. With a few more arrivals I was ready to get the early bird photo. All of a sudden a nice group.
As more people strolled in, it became livelier in spirited conversations and everyone looked happy. Naturally.I got one photo on one side and one photo of the group on the right side of the dance floor.
Then DJ Augusto arrives, the music begins and a few have to get up and dance. Naturally. These people know what to do. And Social Dancing is what they come to do.
Standing: Augusto, Noemi and Miriam. Sitting: Dory, Romy and Ben
Line dancing, Naturally. Now firmly entrenched in the social dance scene. Still a no-no for the Odder Kine dancing.
Nora gave us some inspiring informatiom, Roger gave the invocation in thanks and the Kau Kau began.
Upper photos of the prayer on both sides of the dance floor. Lower left, the Kau Kau line and on the right Sister Chapter Pearlridge sharing in our joy. Social Dancing continued, and I was able to dance a few. Then got a last photo.
The New Officers:
Tim Cubero Jr. Reporter, (should have Ace before the title.) Lorna Depew, Treasurer and I told her I will apply for the job coming up of shoveling the money into the safe as it comes in. Nora and Willy Dionisio the body of this club and continuing to do a great job. And the new president Martin Powell. I was hoping to get a quote such as “Once we’ve got control of dancing on the entire West Coast of this Island, why stop there?”
More Line Dancing and those people are having fun, enjoying themselves and moving to music. I left in time to get the last C bus going to Nanakuli. Was home before ten pm. So how was your day?

Welcome to this updated West Side Edition of the HBDA Kapolei Evening News!
Those of us who attended the recent HBDA Telemark Ball on May 3rd at the Ala Wai Palladium were thrilled to watch our teachers Mike and Marcia demonstrate their skill and grace matched with confidence and command as they performed their rendition of the Paso Doble in front of a crowd of well over 300 spectators! Our dance instructors’ mastery on the floor encouraged us to want to continue and learn more about the gift of dance, and we look forward to having both Mike and Marcia at our popular, traditional end-of-the-quarter social dance and potluck coming up very soon.

It’s been awhile since we last appeared on the screen! As this new year has already gone more than underway, we hope you have already put on your dancing shoes to get on the dance floor.
What about our dance floor – at Kapolei Elementary School Monday nights
7:00 – 9:00 p.m.!
Our chapter continues with vigor, especially with countless members as new beginners as well as seasoned dancers. We are all so encouraged to find the many, many new faces joining us at the beginning of 2012 which made this new quarter very refreshing – this too with three new dances to learn.
NOW THIS IS WORTH GETTING OUT THE FIREWORKS!
We are half way through this quarter with seasoned instructors Mike Agor and Marcia Sorbo teaching the Samba, Fox Trot and West Coast Swing.
